Sarah and Jypsi

Here is Sarah's method for tacking up (saddling) her horse. Before this could be done Jypsi had to be taught to come up to the porch parallel to it and stand quietly for Sarah to put her saddle on. This was not hard and involved basic lungeing techniques. Many people with a disability could tack up their own horses this way (and probably do!)

Bridling from porch. Jypsi is very easy to catch and comes right up to people.
Getting the bridle in the right place and tying the throatlatch. This is a Spanish Jaqima, commonly used for Paso Finos.
Asking Jypsi to stand parallel to the porch. She was then groomed before being saddled. Jypsi loves to be brushed!
Putting on the saddle pad
Lifting the saddle onto her back. This is a lightweight synthetic Australian saddle, so it's not too hard. The girth is then tightened, also while sitting on the step.
Ok, time to get on! Sarah places her right leg over the saddle while Jypsi stands patiently...
gives herself a push off the porch...
And here we are, ready to ride, without asking for assistance from someone else. Sarah's husband Todd often helps when they ride away from home, but even then Sarah can tack and mount herself from the bed of a pickup truck.
